Your goal for Day 1 is to be able to answer the following questions:
- Why did you leave England and voyage to the New World?
- What was it like voyaging across the Atlantic Ocean from England to Virginia?
- How did the physical characteristics of the land influence the decision to settle at the location of Jamestown?
- What is life like at Jamestown?
- What hardships are you facing?
Step 1 - To begin, watch a video on the history of the Jamestown. Click the Jamestown logo to view the video. Listen carefully, as the video will help you to answer many of the questions listed above.
Step 2 - Read the first three paragraphs of the History of Jamestown.
Step 3 - Visit Google Maps and make inferences or suggestions on how the physical characteristics of the land influenced the decision to settle at the location of Jamestown. Do not spend any longer than 2-3 minutes on Google Maps.
Step 4 - National Geographic Magazine helps bring history to life. Click here to go to National Geographic. Skip the intro and select Explore Jamestown on the left to begin. Explore an interactive map of the James Fort at Jamestown. The features of this map will help you to answer some of the questions listed above. Make sure you click Exploring the New World on the far right and select the first link: Ocean Crossing. Then click and watch Sailing the Atlantic. Spend no more than 10 minutes exploring the interactive map.
Step 5 - Watch a short video that describes the hardships you are enduring at your new home, Jamestown.
Step 6 - Using the information you have recorded on your graphic organizer, you will write a letter to a family member or friend back in England. You must address the questions listed at the top of the page in your letter. Your letter must be at least three paragraphs long. You will have 45 minutes of Writer's Workshop to work. Be creative and remember, the year is 1607 and you are an English settler at Jamestown!
