In 1607, a group of 104 English men and boys arrived on the shores of Virginia to form the first permanent English settlement of the New World. Their original intentions for voyaging to Virginia were to make a profit from the resources the New World had to offer. It did not take much time though, before the English put their hopes of profitability aside and shifted focus towards pure survival, as they confronted the harsh realities of life in their new home.
